Chokeberry
(Aronia arbutifolia)
Red Chokeberry

This is a native plant.
It is a good shrub to attract birds as it has small fruits. It will grow to about 9 feet tall. In the spring the white flowers are pretty if you take the time to get close to them, while in the autumn it has bright red berries.
If we are lucky it will spread and make a nice patch of chokecherry! It is tolerant of many growing conditions, and ours (under Mrs. Cashman's windows) is in a good place. It grows almost everywhere in the eastern United States.
To the left is a photo of the plant in it's first spring in the Schoolyard Habitat.
It will be nice if the students in the first grades spy a bird eating the fruit this fall!
Unripe fruits
