Velvetleaf; Pie-maker

(Abutilon theophrasti)

Mallow Family

The name "Pie-maker " refers to the distinctive shape of the seed capsules.

Some say it looks like a fancy edged pie crust. I say it is the size of, and looks like, one of those pie wheels you run along the crust to get a fancy edge.

A native of India.

This is a wonderful plant to feel! You can probably guess why from the name. Luckily the first year it appered in our garden it grew right by the path and it was very convenient for everyone to stop by and rub the leaves.

It grew about three feet or more high, although it can get to six feet.

These pictures were probably taken in summer around July.
